CFL(Compact Fluorescent Lamp).

If I ask you a question that what is the main thing by which we can see anything? The answer will be of course light by which we can see the object.

For the light source, we use different light-emitting objects like tube lights and CFL bulbs, and in the present day, we mostly use LED bulbs.
So, in this article, we will know about CFL bulbs and how they work.

What is a CFL?

The CFL is known as Compact Fluorescent Lamp, and traditional Fluorescent lamps and CFLs are very similar. In fact, a CFL is just a compact version of a fluorescent lamp that is smaller and easier to install. The glass tube is bent and both its ends are fixed on a base that holds the ballast and can fit into standard bulb sockets. Therefore, there is no major difference between the principle of a fluorescent lamp and a CFL.

CFL converts electrical energy to radiant energy. They are energy efficient and use better technology as compared to conventional Fluorescent lights and bulbs.

The CFL has two components.

  • A glass tube that is filled with argon and mercury vapor & coated with a layer of fluorescent material.
  • An electronic ballast circuit.

CFL component

The circuit has two terminals  Cathode and Anode which are inserted into the ends of the fluorescent tube. When the power is supplied to the circuit, Cathode is heated enough to emit the electrons into the tube. These electrons travel through the tube and reach another end of the tube where they are received by the anode.

The ballast circuit takes a 220 V input from the power source and sends the current into the fluorescent tube as output. When the power supply is given to the CFL, the filament attached to the cathode heats up and emits electrons in the tube. This ionizes the argon and mercury vapor particles.

The working mechanism of CFL(Compact Fluorescent Lamp).

Working of CFL
The working mechanism of CFL is very much simple to understand, The Fluorescent tube is filled with Argon and mercury vapors. When the power supply is given to the CFL's fluorescent tube, the filament and the cathode heat up and emit electrons in the tube. This ionizes the argon and mercury vapor particles. The ionized particles emit ultraviolet radiations which strike with the fluorescent layer of material coated on the tube. In turn, fluorescent material spread a white light.
By which the light is produced and the room fills with light and we can see also in a dark room.

That is all about CFL, In this article, we had known about the CFL, its components, and the working CFL. I hope you have understood the topic.
