Multiple types of camera used in latest smartphones

The camera in smartphones is the first need of a buyer, and nowadays it is very rear to see a smartphone with a single camera. All the latest smartphones today come with a minimum of 2 rear-facing cameras.

But why do we need a multi-camera setup in smartphones?
The reason is that the smartphone's camera is smaller in size and only a single camera is not capable to perform all the necessary tasks which we can do with a DSLR camera.

So, for performing different tasks different cameras are been used.

List of multiple types of cameras used in Smartphones.
  • Depth sensor.
  • Monochrome.
  • Wide angle camera.
  • Telephoto camera.
These are 4 types of cameras which are used recently in Smartphones.
Now we will know about this camera one by one.

Depth sensor.

In this system, the primary camera is combined with the secondary camera whose only function is to make a 3D map of the area which is in front of the camera. As you know, we can see in 3D because we have two eyes with slightly different perspectives that help us to measure depth, especially for things that are close to us.

The secondary camera tells roughly how far the object in front of it is concerning each other. This information is then used to separate the foreground subject from the background.

Monochrome camera.

The monochrome camera does not have the RGB colour filter, which means that the sensor cannot capture colour information but because there is one less thing blocking the sensor, the monochrome camera can capture more light.

Every time you take a picture, the camera system combines the output of cameras by layering them into one image. When the two images are combined they will have greater detail and reduced noise.

Wide-angle camera.

Wide angle camera

A wide-angle camera gives you a wide field of view that allowed the user to capture a much wider area without having to move back, or capture interesting images by a wide-angle lens.
The wide-angle lens gives a very unique perspective that you simply don’t get at all on smartphone cameras and we can capture a large group of people without moving backwards from our place and also lets you capture some really cool-looking shots.

Telephoto camera.

The most common for all the multi-camera systems today is the telephoto camera. In this, the primary camera is paired with a secondary camera that has a telephoto lens. it is just the opposite of the wide-angle camera system it lets you zoom into your subject instead of zooming out.
By this, you get 2x lossless optical zoom. Zooming on smartphones has largely been digital until now but with this, you get to quickly move 2x closer to your subject with very little quality loss. Any further zooming is done digitally still but because the digital zoom is now being applied after applying 2x optical zoom, it gives much better results.
